30" x 40" painting while in progress, July 2008, of Lake Bottom Park in Columbus, GA.
July 9. I painted the canvas a mixed
green turpentine wash and wiped away
the highlights with a rag to draw the
shapes. This is my favorite way to
work and is my favorite part of
painting.
July 12. I "drew" in the dark areas
with turpentine and raw umber. Now
I let this dry and it will act as the
foundation for the thicker paint to
come next. Some areas will stay thin
with oil glazes built up to the right
shade, rather than thick paint.
July 15. Time for details: I start
with the farthest distance and
work forward. That bank has
hundreds of rocks but I am only
painting the impression so as not to
detract from my real subject, which
is the light.
